Korea will hold its first major business consultation event in Mongolia next week to help Korean investors find local partners for new business opportunities there, a local trade agency said yesterday. The South Korea-Mongolia Economic Cooperation Partnering event will be held in Ulan Bator on Monday and will involve 15 officials from 13 South Korean firms and some 100 local business representatives, according to the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency.
China and Taiwan signed a de facto free trade agreement, known as the Economic Cooperation Framework Accord (ECFA) this week. The two overcame political and ideological differences in order to achieve mutual economic prosperity. Now is the time to ponder the creation of a free trade area and ultimately a single market in Northeast Asia.
The ECFA could be and should be a baby step toward an FTA encompassing Northeast Asia. Korea, Japan and China could expand trade and stimulate economic vitality through FTAs with each other. This would create an FTA area in the world’s most dynamic region. It would ultimately lead to an EU-style Northeast Asian Community.
Russia, Taiwan and even Mongolia could be invited to participate. China should declare that it will not oppose Taiwan’s signing of FTAs with Korea, Japan and other countries, at least on a nongovernmental basis. It may be premature and untimely for North Korea to join in the process.
Japan’s Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada and Mongolian leaders on Monday agreed that the two countries will strengthen their links in the field of mineral resources.

Moxon Huddersfield is one of the oldest textile houses in England. When I say old, I don’t mean the American idea of old, I mean pre-colonial. The house was established in 1556, and has been producing the highest quality, most expensive textiles ever since. The cloth produced by Moxon is extraordinary in a number of ways. They have continued to use time-tested methods of handcrafting for the past several centuries. While it takes a mass production facility only a few hours to produce cloth, the Moxon method takes 8 days!
Mongolia, one day, hopes to export more than just coal to neighboring China. At a recent cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Sukhbaatar Batbold outlined plans to ramp up the country’s investments in alternative energy and to export wind power to China — enough to equal 40 million tons of coal.

A bank spokesman said any Mongolian worker is allowed to use the facility free of charge. Free rental services are also available.
With financial support from Abu Dhabi, conservationists have started to build the first of 5,000 artificial nests in the Mongolian steppes in a bid to increase the number of breeding Saker Falcons. The Saker Falcon population has been declining rapidly due to capture for the falconry trade, loss of habitat and pollution. Work on the project is already under way and, by the end of October, the conservationists hope to have all the nests erected within a wilderness area of 25,000 square kilometres. The project, which is being conducted at a cost that was not disclosed, is a collaboration between the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Mongolia’s Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism. Work is to be carried out by the International Wildlife Consultants and its Mongolian partner, the Wildlife Science and Conservation Centre.

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia — In the two decades since the Soviet Union dissolved and Mongolia became an independent democracy, the country has struggled to resuscitate cultural traditions lost during its many years as a Soviet satellite.
“Stalin wanted to bring Russian culture to Mongolia and destroy Mongolia’s national ambition,” explained the poet G. Mend-Ooyo, speaking in the book- and calligraphy-filled office of the Mongolian Academy of Culture and Poetry, of which he is president and founder. “He couldn’t do it completely, but from 1940 to 1990 we were far from our culture. We used Russian script, we couldn’t mention the name ‘Chinggis Khaan’ [Genghis Khan], we didn’t know our own history.”
Stewart Group, the international inspection, analysis and assay group has expanded its operations in Mongolia, with a state-of-the-art expansion at its laboratory in the heart of the country.
A new fire assay laboratory has been added to the Stewart Mongolia LLC facility in Ulaanbaatar, which can now provide a significantly broader range of services to the key mining regions in the country. The expansion is the second major development at the Mongolia facility in 12 months, after it became the first internationally owned laboratory in the country to achieve ISO/IEC 17025:2009 accreditation.

BBC News.
Regular exchanges between the Vietnamese and Mongolian parliaments have helped strengthen cooperative relations between the two countries, said Deputy Speaker of the Mongolian Parliament G.Batkhuu.
Outside the Trump Taj Mahal, some pushers, like 21-year-old Mujgee Enkhtaivan, said they’d been waiting for hours.
Enkhtaivan is a college student in his native Mongolia, studying human resources. This is his first visit to the United States, and he said he could take it or leave it.
“It’s all right,” he said. “I’m not making what I thought I would make.”
A training exercise hosted by Mongolia with the aim to improve UN peacekeeping operations has started in a military camp 65 km west of the Mongolian capital, officials said Monday.
About 204 military personnel from Mongolia and 125 others from Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India, the United States and Canada are participating in the drill known as Khaan Quest 2010.
The event, which runs through Aug. 21, includes UN military staff level courses, platoon level command-headquarters courses, mobile field medical group activities and humanitarian engineering operations, officials said.
Mongolia has been organizing Khaan Quest exercises since 2003 and in 2006 at the request of the U.S. Pacific Command, the exercise was turned into a multinational military one.
A total of some 4,500 military personnel from 30 countries have participated in Khaan Quest exercises since 2003, said Bayarmagnai, brigadier general and vice chairman of the Headquarters of Mongolian Armed forces.
This year’s military exercise is the largest training for the Mongolian military personnel before they serve as UN peacekeepers in Lebanon next year, said the general.
Mongolia is now seeking a bigger role in UN peacekeeping missions around the world. Better pay for UN peacekeepers draws many Mongolian soldiers to serve as international blue helmets.
“A lifetime of experience, years of training and a sleepless night of preparation – yet Tsedendamba’s stallion, in the fifth and prime year of its racing career, trailed across the finish line in 12th place. ’Last year it came in second. This time we had the dzud, bitter winter conditions, and that’s why I didn’t push it harder in training. The horse is too thin’, said the 61-year-old herder. Mongolia‘s national festival of Naadam, which saw contests in the ‘manly sports’ of archery, racing and wrestling across the country, dates from before Genghis Khan’s time and celebrates the country’s fabled nomadic spirit. Almost a third of the population are herders. But the catastrophic winter killed millions of animals and left thousands of rural families struggling to survive. It has also exacerbated the country’s financial woes, increasing the pressure to exploit its vast but largely untapped mineral resources. Two decades after the collapse of communism, Mongolia may be at another turning point”
The creeping reality that banning pornography will be no easy task for the government became even more evident on Monday, when at least two public computer screens in the House of Representatives suddenly began broadcasting pornographic images.
The two touch-screen public information terminals, located near the media room in Nusantara III, were seemingly hacked to redirect to a porn Web site. It was reportedly discovered just after lunch by a journalist who tried to access the House schedule for the day.
But for the next 15 minutes, what was displayed on the screen were extremely hard-core photographs and advertisements — including one for “young teens” — from an adult Web site that is banned in neighboring Singapore and Malaysia. Security personnel had to switch off the terminals to stop the offensive broadcast.
Their right hands rise to black-clad chests and flash out in salute to their nation: “Sieg heil!” They praise Hitler’s devotion to ethnic purity.
But with their high cheekbones, dark eyes and brown skin, they are hardly the Third Reich’s Aryan ideal. A new strain of Nazism has found an unlikely home: Mongolia.
Once again, ultra-nationalists have emerged from an impoverished economy and turned upon outsiders. This time the main targets come from China, the rising power to the south.
Groups such as Tsagaan Khass, or White Swastika, portray themselves as patriots standing up for ordinary citizens in the face of foreign crime, rampant inequality, political indifference and corruption.
But critics say they scapegoat and attack the innocent. The US state department has warned travellers of increased assaults on inter-racial couples in recent years – including organised violence by ultra-nationalist groups.
Mongolian police have been accused of “deliberately obstructing” investigations into the death of a Bath man shot in the country 13 years ago.
An inquest was held yesterday into the death of Tim Jarman, who was killed in his apartment while working in the Mongolian capital of Ulaan Bator in June 1997.
But the mystery of how and why he came to receive a single gunshot wound to the head has never been solved, and the Mongolian investigation into the incident was closed in 1999.
An inquest was finally held after Avon coroner’s office received enough paperwork for a hearing to take place.
The camel has long had a special place in the imagination of the West, from the Greek historian Herodotus telling a story about Indians using fast-running camels to defeat dog-sized, man-eating ants that guarded gold, through the Three Magi journeying to Christ’s birth, Lawrence of Arabia and the desert chic of Camel cigarettes.
At school you probably learned that the dromedary (shaped like a D) has one hump, and the bactrian (shaped like a B) has two (all very orderly). But perhaps you don’t know that in the first week of their foetal life, all baby camels have two humps. Or that the world’s camel cultures are in crisis. Some camels are threatened with extinction. Others are being slaughtered as pests. Modernity, urbanination and motorisation are slowly destroying a way of life that has survived for thousands of years.
Questions concerning negotiations with Mongolia on natural resources development and an Economic Partnership Agreement
A man who was found dead in Mongolia 13 years ago died of a gunshot wound to the head, an inquest heard. But the coroner said there was not enough proof to record a verdict that Tim Jarman, 50, from Bath, was unlawfully killed. Instead, Maria Voisin, the acting coroner for Avon, recorded an open verdict on agricultural consultant Mr Jarman. After the hearing, his widow Sally said she was satisfied with the verdict.
